Limbaugh, you magnificent bastard! You’ve done it again!

April 9th, 2008 Central Archivist

Rush Limbaugh has managed to pretty much completely misunderstand science
once again, this time in reference to the Higgs Boson, or “god particle.”

First ID, Now IC: Intelligent Crater Theory

October 1st, 2007 PatrickHenry

["Evidence" of meteor craterism]

The Scientific Case Against Craterism

1. Craterism is only a theory. It has never been proved. Meteor craters have not been observed to happen, now or in the past.

2. Meteor craters have never been reproduced in the lab. Craterists can produce micro-craters, but have no evidence of macro-cratering. Craterism makes no predictions and is untestable; it is therefore not scientific.

3. The second law of thermodynamics prohibits meteor craters.

A Look at Creation “Science” — Part VI

June 29th, 2007 Bones

THIS IS THE SIXTH OF A CONTINUING SERIES examining what is being passed off as science on creationist websites.

This article examines a specific false claim made on numerous creationist websites in an attempt to discredit radiocarbon dating. A list of some of the websites repeating this false claim appears at the bottom of this article.

Claim:

“Some time ago eleven human skeletons, remains of the earliest humans in the western hemisphere, were dated by this new `accelerator mass spectrometer’ technique to about 5000 radiocarbon years or less. [R.E.Taylor, `Major Revisions in the Pleistocene Age Assignments for the North American Human Skeletons by C-14 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry', American Antiquity, Vol. 50, No.1, 1985, pp. 136-140] Source

June 25th, 2007 Bones

THIS IS THE FIFTH OF A CONTINUING SERIES examining what is being passed off as science on creationist websites.

This article examines a specific false claim made on numerous creationist websites in an attempt to discredit radiocarbon dating. A list of some of the websites repeating this false claim appears at the bottom of this article.

Claim:

Natural gas from Alabama and Mississippi (Cretaceous and Eocene, respectively) — should have been 50 to 135 million years old. C14 gave dates of 30,000 and 34,000, respectively. Source

Limbaugh, dammit! It is science!

April 23rd, 2007 Central Archivist

ONCE MORE RUSH LIMBAUGH opens his mouth and steps in it.  During a call in to his show today (2007-04-23) one caller took him to task for his claims there is no consensus in science.  Limbaugh has been making this argument on a regular basis in regards to global warming because some article on the subject said there was a scientific consensus on the subject.

Thoughts on … well … thought

March 27th, 2007 Central Archivist

VIEWING WHAT PASSES FOR “GREAT” ART RECENTLY, I was reminded of Sturgeon’s Law: “90 percent of everything is crap.”    This got me thinking about another pet theory of mine:

90 percent of the human race is non-sapient.

Evolution in Five Easy Steps

March 22nd, 2007 PatrickHenry

WERE THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION EVEN REMOTELY like the grotesque caricature presented by various creationist and intelligent design websites, there would be no debate. It is pernicious that one of the most elegant works of science should be so routinely misrepresented. Before one can evaluate a theory’s merits, he is obliged to at least understand what it actually does — and does not — state. Failing to understand something before attempting debate against it is absolute folly. Therefore, we offer the following:

Even Creationists Know Evolution’s True

March 22nd, 2007 Central Archivist

CONFESSION TIME.  I STARTED LIFE AS A CREATIONIST.  Both my parents were creationists (though I suspect my father was changing his attitude on this subject toward the end of his life).  I lived most of my life in the South, where religion is a given and most folks are what I call “passive creationists” (they don’t really give the matter much thought, but they’re sure the Bible’s account is pretty much correct).
